Wyoming women of distinction honored for efforts around state

CHEYENNE - Mickey Babcock of Jackson will receive the 2009 Woman of Distinction Award presented by the Wyoming Council for Women's Issues on Oct. 2 in Jackson. The awards luncheon will also honor other accomplished women in the state, including Debra Farris of Casper, Lisa Gossett of Laramie, and Mary Martin of Jackson.

Each year, the Wyoming Council for Women’s Issues accepts nominations for this once in a lifetime award. Nominees are evaluated for their impact on women and/or families in the areas of education or employment, community outreach, health and wellness, and legal issues.

Mickey Babcock was selected to receive this year’s award for her extensive work as a core trust holder in “Womentum,” a group of Jackson Hole women dedicated to bringing about social change through a unique program called “Womentoring.” The group recently began working with CLIMB Wyoming to prepare single mothers for employment and to make better wages.

Throughout her life, Babcock has been dedicated to progressive causes. She started The Equipoise Fund, whose mission is to energize, enrich and encourage the vision, voice and visibility of the women and girls of Wyoming. In 2006, the fund presented the first ever “Atta Girl Awards” which recognizes inspiring Wyoming women who use their energy and creativity to create positive change for women in the state. She is also an honorary trustee of the Wyoming Women’s Foundation, a member of the International Women’s Forum, a hospice volunteer, and serves as a trustee for the boards of GAP! (Girls Actively Participating), Teton Science Schools and Rhodes College.
